Today’s Wordle #787 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, August 15th

Another day, another Wordle. The popular viral word puzzle game continues to entertain and delight puzzle-solvers across the world. It has spawned many clones and imitators, but none have usurped the Wordle throne.

And so I keep writing this daily guide and will continue to do so as long as readers keep coming back for hints and clues and to play competitive Wordle and solve Wordle Wednesday puzzles and all the rest. I appreciate everyone who keeps coming back and reading.

I had a strange dream last night—well, this morning—that it had snowed overnight and buried us in under several feet of winter. It was one of those dreams that’s so real, it took me a minute after waking to realize that no, I didn’t actually have to go shovel. It’s August 15th, still very much summertime. I think last winter was a bit traumatizing!

Alright, shake it off, Erik! Let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Cards.

The Clue: This Wordle begins with a vowel.

Wordle Bot Analysis

Another two-guess Wordle today. A couple days ago I got it in two also, though Wordle Bot also got it in two negating that sweet extra point. In any case, I got very lucky with my opening guess today. Video is a pretty good starting word given how many vowels it has, but today it was especially lucky, leaving me with just 1 possible solution: index for the win!

Today’s Score

I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating Wordle Bot who guessed in three (slate / diner / index) for a whopping 3 points! Huzzah! (If only this was 2XP Friday!)

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “index” has its origins in Latin, where it comes from the word “indīcēs,” which means “informant,” “sign,” or “indicator.” This Latin word is derived from the verb “indicāre,” which means “to point out” or “to indicate.”

Can you solve today’s phrase?

In English, “index” entered the language through Old English and Middle English, retaining its basic meaning of a pointer or indicator. Over time, its usage expanded to refer to a list or alphabetical guide, often found at the end of a book, where key terms or topics are listed along with page numbers for easy reference. This modern sense of an alphabetical list with references likely comes from the concept of an indicator pointing to specific information within a larger text.

The word “index” has been used with these meanings for centuries and has further evolved in modern times to encompass digital and online references, such as search engine indexes or database indexes, where it still retains its fundamental sense of pointing or indicating.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

  • Here are the rules:
  • 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating me
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.

I’d love it if you gave me a follow on Twitter or Facebook dearest Wordlers. Have a lovely day!

As always, I’d love it if you’d follow me here on this blog and subscribe to my YouTube channel and my Substack so you can stay up-to-date on all my TV, movie and video game reviews and coverage. Thanks!
