There are portable TVs and then there’s LG’s new StanbyME Go: A surprise new addition to LG’s 2023 TV range that’s actually built into a suitcase.
LG’s original StanbyME TV, launched back in January, was strange enough, designed as it was to put a 27-inch TV on a pole attached to a wheeled base so that you could trundle it around with you to different rooms in your house. The more imaginative side of LG’s product design division, though, now seems to have decided that the original StanbyME just wasn’t portable enough, and have now placed the same 27-inch LED screen into a piece of luggage.
While experience of high concept products suggests there will be some performance compromises attached to a convenience product like the StanbyME Go, it does boast a few surprisingly ‘serious’ features. Its LCD panel is driven by the same Alpha 7 Gen 5 AI processor, for instance, that’s used in some of LG’s mid-range big-screen TVs. It also supports the premium Dolby Vision high dynamic range format, which carries extra scene by scene picture information to help compatible TVs deliver better picture quality than you get with the basic HDR10 HDR format.
The Dolby connection extends to its audio, too, with its built-in 20W stereo speaker system apparently capable of delivering a (virtual) Dolby Atmos sound experience.
The screen also carries LG’s webOS smart system, providing built-in access to all the main video streaming services, as well as supporting Apple AirPlay2 and screen mirroring with both iOS and Android devices. The TV’s physical connectivity, meanwhile, includes an HDMI port alongside the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options so that you can hook up a games console or other external video device. Assuming you’ve also tucked that console or other video device into some other bag you’ve packed.
Owners of PS5s, Xbox Series Xes or premium PCs should note that the screen only boasts a native full HD resolution, 60Hz refresh rate and HDMI 2.0 port, so it won’t deliver your games with the same fidelity you’re probably used to getting on your big TV at home. But this seems a fair enough compromise for a convenient gaming-on-holiday solution.
The TV can be controlled via a remote handset or voice recognition, but also, unlike regular TVs, it’s touch sensitive, allowing you to choose options simply by pressing the relevant part of the screen.
If you’re wondering how flexible a TV in a suitcase can be when it comes to viewing positions and set ups, the screen is actually attached to a stand within the case that enables it to be swiveled, tilted and rotated. It can even be set up in portrait as well as landscape orientation, or used in table mode, where it lies flat in the case. An official photograph released by LG suggests its touch sensitive screen could allow it to be used in its table setting for potential simple touch-control gaming options, such as chess or draughts.
The StanbyME Go screen can run for up to three hours on a single battery charge when not attached to the mains, while the case it sits in also carries a few compartments where you can store small accessories.
If you happen to be in the market for a TV to take on holiday with you alongside the rest of your luggage, you can preorder the StanbyME Go now from LG’s US website for $999. If you order one before the end of August 27, you will also be entitled to claim a free LG XBOOM 360 Bluetooth Speaker, which would normally set you back $299.
