Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus Brings This Premium Feature For Fraction Of The Price

The Oppo flagship, Find X6 Pro, has one of the best zoom cameras on any smartphone this year. A periscope lens gives you access to new perspectives that you usually don’t get with the primary or ultrawide cameras. However, this feature remains limited to flagship phones like the Galaxy S23 Ultra, Xiaomi 13 Pro, and Oppo’s own Find X6 Pro.

And that’s why you should pay attention to the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus. It’s one of the rare phones to offer a periscope camera for under $660 / 55,000 Indian Rupees (INR).

The Reno 10 Pro Plus sports a 64MP telephoto camera with a f/2.5 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS) alongside the 50MP primary camera and a 8MP ultrawide-angle sensor. It supports 3x optical zoom and 120x digital zoom, and I’ve gotten some impressive results up to 6x zoom with usable images at up to 30x. If you are someone who enjoys photographing pets, attending concerts, or capturing architectural imagery, the periscope camera is a godsend.

I went to a Lucky Ali concert in Delhi last week and took the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus with me. I use the iPhone 14 Pro Max as my primary phone, which offers 3x optical zoom and only up to 15x digital zoom – I was ready to be disappointed. But I wasn’t sure if the Reno would beat the iPhone in digital zoom. Here’s a comparison between the two:

Three takeaways here – First, the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus is offering 30x digital zoom results that compete with phones priced 2.5x higher than this. Second, Reno’s 30x zoom pic looks better on social media than the iPhone’s 15x zoom image. Third, Oppo is using AI to enhance the image, as can be seen from the facial details on the singer’s face. The first image looks sharper (still, lacks details) and usable for 30x. I posted the two images one after other on my Instagram Stories, and the Reno 10 Pro Plus received the vote of confidence.

It’s surprising how good the digital zoom is on the Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus for the price. It also captures great portraits too, by the way (samples below).

The edge detection, colors and background blur is top-notch. I feel like Oppo is using the same camera algorithm on the Reno 10 Pro Plus that is used on the Find X6 Pro. Although, the images aren’t as detailed as the flagship device, they are surprisingly good. As for the ultrawide camera, it is average at best.

Enough camera talk, how about the rest of the phone?

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus features a 6.74-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with support for a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1,400 nits for HDR content on Amazon Prime. I appreciate the vibrant display on offer here, coupled with the good stereo speaker setup. Moreover, it’s comfortable to hold due to its slim design. At 194 grams, it isn’t lightweight, but it’s certainly one of the lightest phones equipped with a periscope camera.

The Reno 10 Pro Plus is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, built on TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process. It comes with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. I didn’t experience any stutter or lag in my day-to-day usage. For gamers out there, the Reno 10 Pro Plus can handle Ultra HD graphics and Ultra frame rates in BGMI. However, it’s worth noting that the phone tends to get warm after 30 minutes of gameplay at HDR graphics and Extreme frame rates.

The phone runs Color OS 13 based on Android 13. My one annoyance with this phone is receiving notifications from apps that I haven’t even touched after setting up the phone – like Game Center and App Market. While these can be disabled easily, I don’t like getting pinged with random notifications throughout the day.

Plus, you get a bunch of non-Google apps and games pre-installed, which some might consider as “bloatware.” However, apps like Facebook, Dailyhunt, PhonePe, and Snapchat can be useful for some. On another note, I like the animations and multitasking features of Color OS.

The Oppo Reno 10 Plus packs a 5,000mAh battery. In my experience, it lasted me an entire day with moderate use but struggled to get me through the day when I was taking a lot of photos or using navigation extensively. However, this wasn’t much of an issue because it can be charged from zero to full in just 25 minutes using the bundled 100W SuperVOOC charger.

Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus: How does it compare with the competition?

If you are in the market for a phone to play games on, the iQOO 11 is a better deal, while the OnePlus 11 seems like a more balanced package. However, if you are someone who needs a good zoom camera but can’t spend above INR 55,000, this is the phone for you.

The Oppo Reno 10 Pro Plus offers a great display, comfortable in-hand feel, good performance and battery life and an impressive telephoto camera. You’ll have to spend a bit of time uninstalling apps that you won’t use and turning off notifications from App Market and Game Center. But at INR 54,999, the Reno 10 Pro Plus is a good deal.
