Some Destiny 2 players have been complaining that reprised raid exotic, Necrochasm, is underpowered after the work it takes to get it in Crota’s End. One common idea brought up is that it should do its “Cursed Thrall explosion” on bodyshot kills, not just headshot kills like it is now.
Well…turns out there’s a way to do this after all, one of Bungie’s trademark “Weapons of Sorrow” interactions. I am not sure who found this first, but there’s a tweet from yesterday about it from Mossy Max, and a reddit thread about the same thing by LegoWitch. In either case, the new is spreading around the community, so I thought I’d cover it here.
So what’s the deal? Turns out if you kill an enemy with Necrochasm who is affected by a Weapons of Sorrow effect, you can indeed get those Cursed Thrall explosion bodyshot kills. That includes:
- Osteo Striga, and it’s already-existing interaction with Necrotic Grips, producing poison that effects enemies for up to 9.3 seconds.
- Touch of Malice’s Blight, affecting for 5 seconds.
- Thorn’s poison, 2 seconds.
- And Necrochasm’s own poison, 2 seconds.
Those two second ones are not a lot of leeway, but nine full seconds with Osteo Striga has the potential to clear rooms faster than well, Osteo Striga/Necrotic itself, one of the most power mob-clearing options in the game already.
This isn’t just a theory, you can both see it in practice, and Bungie weapon designer Mercules posted this after it was found yesterday:
Bungie has been doing more with exotic interactions lately, but it’s usually armor interacting with weapons within a class, like we saw with Hunter and its moth generation this season, combing new arms with a new grenade launcher. But this is an interesting interaction between Weapons of Sorrow (enhanced with Necrotic Grip on top of that) for those bodyshot kills people want.
Give that this exists, I doubt that Bungie will ever go all the way and have Necro produce explosions on all kills. That may be a…bit overpowered, but it stands to reason the gun could be buffed another way. Bungie had to do something with Touch of Malice when that returned, another Weapon of Sorrow that seemed like it was underpowered at launch, and eventually received pretty significant buffs.
So, it takes two exotic weapon slots on two different people, but you may want to give this a try, particularly with just how many enemy-dense encounters we’ve seen lately, from new dungeons and raids to even Battleground final rooms. Pretty cool, in any case.
