Overwatch 2’s next map, Samoa, will arrive when Season 7 goes live on October 10. Blizzard teased the Control map last week, but fans got their first proper look at it during this weekend’s Overwatch League Grand Finals.
Game director Aaron Keller and executive director Jared Neuss joined the broadcast to reveal all about Samoa. They noted that the three points are very different from each other and that one of them is set inside a volcano — I’m sure Torbjorn must be delighted.
We’ve had a ton of maps over the years in which water is a hazard to players, but not many in which lava means death. So, this is a fun Ring of Fire-inspired change. But not to worry, H2O enthusiasts: there’s plenty of water around Samoa’s Beach point as well.
The map looks beautiful, as most Overwatch maps tend to be. You can expect to find a bunch of Easter eggs too, including some nods to Mauga (who surely must be the next hero after all of these teases).
My favorite thing about all of this — other than a very, very fun show match on the new map that you can watch below — was the revelation that there are some twists in store for the Samoa spawn points. Instead of basketballs, you’ll be trying to shoot coconuts into the basket instead. As an Overwatch Control map basketball enthusiast, I love that for me.
