New Shows And Movies To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, Hulu, Paramount+, Amazon Prime And More

Another weekend, another batch of new movies and TV shows to stream on all your favorite streaming services.

This week we have silly pirates, trickster gods and organ thieves to keep us glued to our seats. Sure, the days are lovely this time of year, but it’s starting to get chilly at night, and what better excuse do you need to curl up on the couch with your friends and family?

Honestly, you don’t need an excuse but there is some good stuff out right now that you should definitely check out.

So without further adieu, let’s take a look at everything new to stream this weekend.

Our Flag Means Death (HBO)

Okay, I have a confession: I haven’t even watched Season 1 of Taika Waititi’s hilarious-looking pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death. I watched some trailers and then . . . I guess life is busy and there are just a lot of shows and games and anyways, I plan on remedying this because I’ve heard such great things and now that Only Murders In The Building has wrapped its (EXCELLENT) third season, I need another funny show. The first three episodes landed on HBO this week. Rhys Darby’s Captain Stede Bonnet and Waititi’s Blackbeard will be joined by Minnie Driver this season as the pirate Ann Bonny. Man, I wish I was a pirate, they get the best names!

Loki Season 2 (Disney+)

Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson return as Loki and Mobius in Season 2 of Loki on Disney+. I have many confessions in this weekend’s guide, but this will be my first: I only watched two episodes of Season 1 before hanging up my hat. I had reached full Marvel burnout at the time (Falcon and the Winter Soldier is mostly to blame) and I just wasn’t feeling it. I keep meaning to catch up. I kept telling myself “Catch up on Loki before Season 2!” but then I just put it off. Hiddleston is charming, Wilson is adorable, and the second season is adding some fun new characters, but I can’t help it! MCU burnout is real. And Disney isn’t helping by releasing so much garbage!

Wes Anderson’s Roald Dahl Netflix Shorts

You know what isn’t garbage? Wes Anderson’s adaptations of Roald Dahl. He started this project with The Fantastic Mr. Fox but has just dropped four short films based on Dahl’s short stories. These include:

  • The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar
  • The Swan
  • The Rat Catcher
  • Poison

I’ve only seen Henry Sugar but I thought it was absolutely delightful. Peak Wes Anderson. Somehow Anderson and Dahl’s style fit so perfectly it’s uncanny. I’ll be watching the other three with my kids who also happen to love both Anderson and Dahl. Good taste these youngsters have!

Bargain (Paramount+)

Korean TV is on fire these days, and Bargain—a new limited series on Paramount+—sounds absolutely riveting. The premise is dark: Men show up at a hotel thinking they’re there to have sex with teenage girls. Instead, it’s all a plot by organ thieves to capture them and harvest their organs. But then an earthquake hits and everyone is trapped inside in a desperate fight for survival against the elements and one another. I’m curious how this works when there doesn’t seem to be anyone to root for, but it sounds exciting and it’s getting great reviews.

Currently Airing Shows

Gen V (Amazon Prime)

The Boys spinoff Gen V dropped last weekend and I’m planning on catching up with it this weekend. I hear it’s pretty good! The Boys is such a great, gory, disgusting superhero parody show. I have high hopes that this will continue to scratch that particular, very specific, itch.

Daryl Dixon (AMC)

I’m really bummed out that the new Walking Dead spinoff series Daryl Dixon is such a mess. It has great production values and a compelling leading man, but the story is just goofy and ridiculous and it’s falling into all of the franchise’s worst habits. But hey, it’s airing its second-to-last episode this weekend on AMC.

At The Movies

The Creator (In Theaters)

If you want to ditch the couch and head to the movie theaters, The Creator is a brand new science-fiction flick from director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) that I’ve heard nothing but gushing praise for. I haven’t made it yet myself but this is my next in-theater movie for sure. I’ve been avoiding spoilers. I hear the new Saw X is quite good also, but I’m not a huge fan of gorefest pictures.

Bonus: Spartacus (VOD)

I’m including a bonus movie in my weekend list now. This week’s pick is the classic, epic historical drama Spartacus. The Stanley Kubrick film came out on October 6th, 1960. Kubrick’s fifth (and by far largest) feature film starred Kirk Douglas, who also produced, across from Laurence Olivier as the Roman general, Marcus Licinius Crassus. One panoramic scene in the film features 8,000 trained Spanish soldiers playing the Roman army. They truly don’t make movies like they used to. The film won four Academy Awards, but trouble on set and behind the scenes led to a rift between Douglas and Kubrick. And you know what? I’m Spartacus!

Both Only Murders In The Building and Ahsoka aired their season finales this past Tuesday, so those come off the list. Only Murders Season 3 was absolutely terrific and the finale was just about perfect, setting up a cliffhanger for Season 4 (which has been renewed). I’m less thrilled by Ahsoka but it was decent enough for Disney-era Star Wars.
