The Power Of Horizontal Products For Creators And Brands

In the dynamic landscape of the creator economy, the choice between horizontal and vertical products can play a pivotal role in shaping the success of creators and brands. Horizontal products, which are platform-independent and versatile, have emerged as powerful tools for unlocking creativity and fostering growth. In this article, I’ll explore the value of horizontal products and their significance for both creators and brands in the digital realm.

Understanding Horizontal And Vertical Products

In the world of the creator economy, horizontal and vertical products represent two distinct approaches. Vertical products are tightly integrated with specific platforms, thus relying on their unique features and functionalities. On the other hand, horizontal products transcend individual platforms.

While vertical products may offer certain benefits within a specific ecosystem, they can limit creators by tying them to a single platform and restricting their potential for growth and diversification. In my experience, using a horizontal platform approach can help account for the increasing dynamic between incumbent and emerging platforms, as well as the tendency of creators to publish different content pieces on different platforms.

The Creator’s Perspective: Embracing Platform Independence

For many creators, the value of horizontal products lies in the freedom and control they provide. By adopting platform-independent tools and strategies, you can maintain more ownership over your content and audience relationships. Horizontal products can enable you to diversify your revenue streams, engage with your audience on your own terms, and build a strong personal brand that extends beyond any single platform. This independence can empower creators to explore new opportunities, experiment with different formats and connect with a wider range of platforms and audiences.

One of my biggest lessons as a founder in this space has been that different creators find success through very different content formats on different platforms. This tells me that true platform independence can be important for fully exploring one’s creative spirit and possibilities.

The Brand’s Perspective: Tapping Into Larger Markets

Horizontal products can also offer significant advantages for brands seeking to connect with larger markets. Instead of being limited to a single ecosystem, you can tap into the collective power of various platforms to increase your exposure, expand your reach and engage with different consumer segments. Horizontal products can allow you to adapt your messaging and content to resonate with specific audiences on their preferred platforms, effectively leveraging the strengths of each platform to drive brand awareness and customer acquisition.

A piece of feedback I often hear is how diverse the creator world is and how many niches brands discover through their engagement in a horizontal marketplace that embraces all sorts of content. In my experience, most brands have very little knowledge of how broad their potential target audience actually is. Here, horizontal platforms can play an important role.

Balancing Horizontal And Vertical Strategies

While horizontal products offer great value, I also recommend that creators and brands carefully balance their use with vertical strategies. Vertical products can still provide unique opportunities for visibility, community building and specialized functionalities. One method to consider is leveraging horizontal products to establish your independence and expand your reach, while selectively utilizing vertical products to tap into dedicated communities, leverage platform-specific features or access specialized monetization options. Striking this balance can help you harness the advantages of both approaches effectively.

Tools And Technologies Empowering Horizontal Products

The growing demand for horizontal products has spurred the development of various tools and technologies that empower creators and brands. Content management systems, cross-platform integrations and API-driven solutions enable seamless content distribution and management across multiple platforms. Creators can leverage these tools to streamline their workflows, engage with their audience across platforms and analyze their performance effectively.

There is power in horizontal products for the creator economy. For creators and brands, platform independence can translate into more creative freedom.
