Volkswagen Plays To Its Wagon Strengths With ID.7 Tourer EV

The swoopy, slightly lumpy coupe/sedan/hatch hasn’t totally worked for Volkswagen and its EV charge, so it’s going back to something it knows – wagons.

The German powerhouse’s next EV will be a wagon version of the 2023 German Car of the Year-winning ID.7, dubbed the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer, and it’s due in Europe next year.

To be built in both Emden, Germany, the ID.7 Tourer will share the ID.7 limousine’s 2966mm (116.8-inch) wheelbase, as well as its stock 77kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

The more practical version of the ID.7, the ID.7 Tourer will join Volkswagen’s array of wagons and add to an increasingly diverse range of names for them, including the Arteon Shooting Brake and the Passat Variant.

By now, maybe they should have settled on just one.

The ID.7 Tourer is not likely to be sold outside Europe, which is why it won’t be built in the FAW-VW plant in Foshan alongside the ID.7 limousine, nor in North America.

There is no word on whether it will be eventually powered by the GTX drivetrain, which includes two electric motors.

Initially, it’s likely to start life with the stock 21okW/545Nm, single-motor, rear-drive powertrain as the ID.7 Pro, and Volkswagen will also offer it with the ID.7 Pro S’s larger 85kWh battery pack.

It’s enough for a top speed of 180km/h, and a zero to 62mph time of 6.5 seconds for the five-metre ID.7 Tourer.

It should eke out almost the same WLTP range as the limousine, thanks to an aerodynamic coefficient that’s just 0.01 higher, giving it a Cd figure of 0.24.

While there are no official figures yet, it should mean the ID.7 Tourer approaches the 621km (386 mile) range of the ID.7 Pro and the 700km (431 mile) range of the ID.7 Pro S.

It gets a boost in luggage capacity over the limousine, but it’s not the leap that might have been expected, rising from 532 liters to 545 liters, and the rear seats can fold down to give a two-meter flat space that is 1714 liters in volume.

The MEB-based ID.7 Tourer will deliver the same cabin space as its limousine sibling, and will weigh slightly more than the limousine’s 2172kg (4788lb).
