On Forbes Newsroom, Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) said that the current president has refused to take his calls since announcing in October.
“I have called the White House twice to speak with him as a courtesy call to let him know about my intentions,” Phillips told Forbes. “Sadly, he did not take the call, which is his prerogative of course.”
Phillips, who according to FiveThirtyEight’s congressional tracker has voted with Biden 100% of the time, noted that he’s had “a fine relationship” with the incumbent, even hosting the president at his own home.
The Democratic congressman expressed his disappointment “that we live in an era where somehow the integrity and courtesy of conversation seems to be going by the wayside.”
While Phillips said his challenge is actually about “protecting [Biden’s] legacy,” he vowed to support the eventual Democratic presidential nominee – even if it is the current president.
