Most of the coverage of the 50th Anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons has looked back on the history of the game. Today, with the announcement of pre-orders being available for the 2024 Core Rulebooks, it’s time to look forward. These upcoming books are essential to the D&D experience at a time when the game has never been more popular.
Wizards of the Coast allowed the press a sneak peek at what’s coming in the new releases. This week kicks off a series of reveals about Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Masters Guide and Monster Manual. The game will continue to be compatible with current Fifth Edition materials though the company took the time to highlight a few of the differences.
Dungeons & Dragons Player’s Handbook 2024 Core Rulebook
This core book has been completely redesigned to walk new players through the process of making characters and learning the rules. It includes two-column example layout where the in-game chatter is on one side and table talk is on the other. The book ends with a massive rules glossary that contains clear explanations of every mechanical term.
This book boasts 48 subclasses, three each for the 12 base classes included within its pages. The classes are a mixture of classic options, popular choices from books like Xanathar’s Guide To Everything and Tasha’s Guide To Everything plus a few new choices. Each of the returning classes has been tightened up to stay on pace with the newer options.
Some of the most interesting new rules are targeted at classes that focus on combat. These classes will have access to weapon mastery which allows them to control the battlefield based on the weapons they wield. These rules make combats more dynamic and more engaging to everyone at the table.
Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Masters Guide 2024 Core Rulebook
Dungeon Masters Guide has also been rewritten to fit its title more suitably. Previous versions often acted like a rules supplement full of the things that couldn’t fit in the Player’s Handbook. This book comes with advice for novice and veteran Dungeon Masters alike.
This version is written to appeal to Dungeons & Dragons players who want to take the big chair as a Dungeon Master. It included plenty of tables and aids to inspire building a campaign that fits their style. It also contains advice on the logistics of running a campaign and how to deal with the challenges that real life can sometimes throw at a campaign.
It also contains one of the biggest changes in the new set of corebooks. The previous core books used the Forgotten Realms as the default campaign setting to inspire D&D groups for their worlds. Dungeon Masters Guide 2024 Core Rulebook reaches back to the beginning of the game and includes Gary Gyax’s Greyhawk setting.
Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual 2024 Core Rulebook
The process of revising monsters for the current edition of Dungeons & Dragons began with Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters Of The Multiverse. That book began the process of revising monster abilities, making them easier for Dungeon Masters to use and adding more flavor into the epic battles at the heart of D&D. That process takes a major step forward with the upcoming Monster Manual.
The designers highlighted a better mix of monsters to challenge high level and low level players. They’ve kept the Challenge Ratings the same to allow maximum compatibility with earlier materials.
