Apple’s iPhone 15 hardware changes border on common knowledge at this point, but mystery still surrounds two elements: price and finish. And the latter just took another interesting twist.
Following head-turning comments last month, consistently reliable Apple insider Unknownz21 provided me with new information about the iPhone 15 range’s potential omission of its most iconic color.
“I’ve been keeping tabs on the development of these devices, and there haven’t been any changes in terms of color options. These have stayed consistent – none of them are red,” Unknownz21 explained. “This doesn’t mean that there will never be red iPhones in the future or that the (Product)Red partnership is coming to an end… [but] I’m not aware of any devices or documents featuring or even mentioning any sort of red color in any capacity.”
Given that Product(Red) iPhones have been released every year for the last five generations, this is a big surprise, even if Apple continues its charity partnership in other areas.
Furthermore, the new ‘hero’ color for the iPhone 15 Pro line was long rumored to be a deep red, with even the specific Pantone color leaking (recreated in the top image). Unknownz21 has promised to reveal the new hero color publicly soon and provided me with additional context for the upcoming leak:
As for the actual 15 Pro hero color, there are multiple things which verify its existence, things I’ve seen personally. There are fully functional prototypes in this color.
Unknownz21 has a strong track record over the last year, revealing accurate information about the iPhone 14 series as well as the Apple Vision Pro headset. The leaker has also broken numerous iPhone 15 details, which other insiders have corroborated.
Beyond this potential color twist, the iPhone 15 lineup is expected to come in four models: the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The standard models will look similar to last year’s iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, adopting the Dynamic Island design, their A16 chipset and 48-megapixel primary camera.
iPhone 15 Pro models will move to a next-generation, 3nm A17 chipset, have much thinner bezels, a new customizable Action button that replaces the mute switch, upgraded cameras (including a Pro Max exclusive periscope lens), upgraded UWB and potentially higher prices. All iPhone 15 models will also adopt USB-C.
It is worth noting that Unknownz21 has been critical of the new iPhones, describing them as “too mediocre of an upgrade.” With Apple’s 2024 iPhone 16 plans already leaking far earlier than expected, upgraders will have a decision to make.
