Leather basques and fishnet stockings at the ready, everyone: Timeless musical classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show turns 50 this year, and Disney is planning to celebrate this latest milestone in the life of the longest-running theatrical film release in cinema history with an extended series of events that Frank-N-Further himself would be proud of. Including the release of a 4K Blu-ray carrying a newly restored version of the film, a ton of extra features and suitably gorgeous steelbook packaging.
The festivities begin on September 23 as a tour of the film kicks off that will ultimately take in no less than 55 cities across the US and Canada, accompanied by meet and greets with three of its original cast members: Barry Bostwick, Patricia Quinn and Nell Campbell.
There will be a special screening of the new 4K restoration of the film followed by a talent Q&A on September 26 at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ David Geffen Theater, and then on September 27 the official Rocky Horror fan convention will take over the Roxy Theater in West Hollywood with panel discussions, book signings, artist appearances and more.
The film’s 4K restoration will then roll out to theaters throughout October, and a 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of the original movie soundtrack will be reissued on 180g red-in-gold vinyl on October 10. The part of the celebrations that most interests my home entertainment channel, though, is the launch on October 7 of the film’s new 4K Blu-ray edition.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s restored 4K master finds the film arriving on 4K disc in Dolby Vision HDR (which defaults down to HDR10 on players or TVs that don’t support Dolby Vision) accompanied by a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. The 4K Blu-ray package will also include an HD Blu-ray of the film, together with a digital streaming code, while the 4K discs Disney is placing the film on will be of the 66GB type rather than the higher-capacity 100GB option. This is a fair enough decision for a film with a relatively modest 98-minute run time.
The film will be presented in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio, and film purists will be keen to hear that alongside the new Dolby Atmos soundtrack in the 4K disc’s sound options will be a restored version of the film’s original 2.0 audio track.
