How Technology Is Transforming Entrepreneurship

Yancey Spruill, CEO at DigitalOcean.

In recent years, the rise of side hustles has become a prominent trend, driven by individuals seeking additional income and the pursuit of their passions. This entrepreneurial wave has been further accelerated by the profound impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and, now, the economic uncertainties we’re experiencing.

As the job market underwent significant disruptions and traditional employment became less stable, more people turned to side hustles as a means of financial security and personal fulfillment. This shift, coupled with the emergence of new cloud technology and the gig economy, has transformed the way individuals approach work and has opened doors to scaling online startups like never before.

According to our latest Currents report—an analysis of trends among digital SMBs—52% of respondents say they have embarked on side hustles outside of their primary income source. While the majority of these side hustles are described as simply jobs that individuals can do on their own, 42% of them are either already successful standalone companies or are on their way to that scale.

While the side hustle and gig economy aren’t new, it is becoming increasingly prevalent—particularly among younger workers. Let’s take a look at why this is and what it means for the future of work.

The Impact Of Technological Advancements

The availability and accessibility of new technologies have played a crucial role in the rapid growth and scaling of side hustles into full-fledged businesses. The onset of the pandemic and the subsequent surge in remote work highlighted the importance of digital tools and platforms.

Cloud computing, for instance, eliminated the need for costly hardware and infrastructure investments, allowing individuals to leverage powerful, third-party computing resources and software applications on demand and around the globe. This democratization of technology has leveled the playing field, enabling small businesses to compete effectively with larger, more established companies.

Technology has also opened up vast digital marketplaces that provide unprecedented access to customers on a global scale, eliminating the need for physical storefronts and reducing barriers to entry. Various e-commerce platforms have revolutionized the way individuals sell products and services—also via the power of the cloud. Through these online marketplaces, side hustlers can showcase their unique offerings (whether it be a crocheted scarf or a digital planner) to a wider audience regardless of geographic location.

AI and ML are taking giant leaps forward. AI has emerged as a transformative force, potentially revolutionizing the way small businesses operate and interact with customers. AI-powered chatbots are able to provide instant customer support, handle inquiries efficiently and ensure a seamless user experience. Advanced AI-driven analytics tools offer valuable insights into customer behavior, market trends and key metrics. By leveraging these insights, small businesses can make data-driven decisions that fuel growth and enhance their competitive edge.

Cloud-based platforms have made it easier than ever to access sophisticated AI tools and ML capabilities, helping entrepreneurs automate complex tasks and optimize operations.

A Generational Shift

The pandemic and subsequent economic turbulence have also spurred a generational shift in expectations toward work. Millennials and Gen-Z, in particular, have been at the forefront of this change, prioritizing flexibility, autonomy and more meaningful work. Entrepreneurship has emerged as an attractive option, allowing them to create fulfilling and rewarding careers on their terms. Technology has been instrumental in supporting this shift, providing the necessary tools and platforms to launch and scale small businesses.

Only accelerating this transition is the gig economy, which has experienced significant growth in recent years. As traditional employment became uncertain, individuals of all ages (but again, overarchingly younger individuals) have turned to freelancing, independent contracting and gig work to bridge financial gaps or explore new opportunities and passions. This gig economy offers a stepping stone for aspiring entrepreneurs, providing them with the chance to test their business ideas, build a client base and ultimately move their dreams forward.

The uncertainties of the last few years have reshaped the landscape of work and entrepreneurship, likely forever. Side hustles, enabled by the gig economy, have become a valid form of employment—if not the preferred form for younger individuals seeking financial stability, personal growth and professional fulfillment. Technological advancements such as cloud computing and, most recently, AI have empowered—and will continue to empower—these entrepreneurs to start and scale businesses and do so more easily than ever.

The generational shift toward flexibility and autonomy, combined with the changes to work expectations, has created a fertile ground for entrepreneurial talent to flourish. I wouldn’t expect this to slow down anytime soon.
