Topline

The U.S. men’s gymnastics team won bronze in Monday’s men’s team competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics, earning the men’s squad its first medal since the 2008 games in Beijing — taking the United States’ medal count to 20 since the games kicked off last week.

Key Facts

Japan earned gold after taking first place in the men’s gymnastics competition with a final score of 259.594, ahead of second-place China (259.062) and third-place United States scored 257.793 points.

The last time the United States men’s gymnastics team won a medal in the team competition was at the Beijing Games in 2008 where they won bronze and before then, 2004 where they won silver—while the team’s last gold medal came in 1984.

The U.S. squad included five athletes—Frederick Richard, Brody Malone, Paul Juda, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik—three of whom performed in each of six events: floor, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.

Nedoroscick helped the team secure a bronze medal with the last act and his only event, the pommel horse, scoring an impressive 14.866.Of the five athletes, four had never competed at the Olympics before, including team captain Richard.

SURPRISING:

Malone, the only returning Olympian in the team, suffered a serious leg injury in 2022, causing doubt about whether he would compete in another Olympic games.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

The men’s floor exercise and pommel horse final are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3, the vault and rings final are set for Sunday and the parallel and horizontal bars finals will take place Monday, Aug. 5. The men’s all-around final is set to take place on Wednesday, July 31.

WHEN WILL SIMONE BILES AND THE WOMEN’S TEAM COMPETE?

Simone Biles—often considered the greatest gymnast of all time—and the U.S. women’s gymnastics team will compete on Tuesday, where they are favorites to win the competition.
