One Fan Of ‘Armored Core VI’ Has Followed Its ‘Virtual On’ Targeting Lineage Rather Literally

One of the interesting aspects of Armored Core VI is its new target assist mechanic, which is something that I explained in my review came from Virtual On. It seems I am not the only one to realize that.

To explain a bit, one of the biggest issues that needs solving in mecha action games is that of targeting in relation to increased relative movement. Human walking and running speeds require all manner of aiming and movement assists in modern shooting games.

With mecha, the relative speeds are much higher and those assists break down. The original Armored Core used a manual target tracking window to alleviate this problem, whereas Virtual On opted for a target lock on for aiming and movement.

In Armored Core VI, both of these approaches are implemented, which means that you could in theory play the game a bit like Virtual On. Well, it’s no longer a theory.

Twitter user ToyonakaOJF has used a heavily modified pair of Dreamcast TwinSticks, that were originally released for Virtual On Oratorio Tangram to play Armored Core VI. Due to the new target assist setup in Armored Core VI, you can see them playing the game just fine with the modified TwinSticks (shown above).

If you are interested in picking up a pair of these modified TwinSticks, they are also being sold on Yahoo Auctions Japan for 29,800 yen (or around $204).

The modifications include all manner of extra buttons, as well as the sticks from the Tanita TwinSticks.

Trying to explain the functional origins behind Armored Core VI is one thing, but having that demonstrated in a physical sense is a lot more helpful.

Armored Core VI is now available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC. Feel free to also check out my review.
