A few days ahead of its official launch, Remnant 2 has soared to the top of the best-sellers on Steam Charts, jumping up 69 places in a week, and getting past both Baldur’s Gate 3 preorders and CSGO’s monstrous, endless microtransactions which usually mean it’s on top, besides being free to play.
The chart is by revenue, not sales totals, and that makes Remnant 2 even more impressive given it’s $50 reduced price compared to $60 or $70 alternatives.
This week, the embargo lifted for reviews of the game and it arrived with a solid 80 on Metacritic, certainly a win for developer Gunfire Games, who seem overwhemled with the reception the game is getting. While Remnant: From the Ashes had its own share of fans, it seems Remnant 2 is going to dwarf the first game in more ways than one.
The game is putting up solid launch on Twitch where it’s still only in early access right now ahead of its July 25 official launch. Right now it’s ahead of both Apex Legends and Diablo 4, even with Diablo’s first season launching this week.
I have seen close to no advertising for Remnant 2, though perhaps I’m just looking in the wrong places. But I feel like this has been a whole lot of organic word of mouth, singing the game’s praises. I wasn’t planning on playing it as I didn’t play the first, but enough people have recommended it to me where I don’t feel like I really have a choice, and when I get back from a trip early next week, I’m going to dive in. My friend Travis, usually the guy they give the worst games to review, gave it a 9/10 on IGN, so that really caught my eye.
It remains to be seen what launch sales this game will have in the end, but given this early Steam performance, I would not be shocked to see it blow past Gunfire’s expectations, and prove to be a big win for publisher Gearbox, of Borderlands fame.
Even in a stretch of 2-3 months that has seen a stuhning amount of fantastic releases, it feels like Remnant 2 may prove to be a solid bookend along with Baldur’s Gate here in the tail end of the summer. Looking forward to checking it out for myself soon.
