Samsung’s next Galaxy flagship is expected in February, and those looking forward to another maximal approach to the hardware may want to look away because the camera may be getting a downgrade.
Over the last three years, the South Korean company has offered its premium Ultra handsets with a 10x optical zoom in the camera. The latest leaks around the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra will come as a disappointment to many as the optical zoom is set to be downgraded.
Details on the new lens arrangement come from noted tipster Ice Universe on X (neé Twitter). They list the S24 Ultra’s two telephoto lenses as a 3x optical zoom on a 10-megapixel lens and a 5x optical zoom on a 50-megapixel lens. They also note that these numbers are trumped by the Xiaomi 13 Ultra which has a larger 50-megapixel sensor for its 3x optical zoom lens.
If the S24 Ultra is released with these specifications, then Samsung will not be winning the Top Trumps of specifications. Samsung may be looking to make up the zoom performance in post-processing, which it currently does with the S23 Ultra to reach 100x of digital zoom.
Given arch-rival Apple has stepped up to 5x optical zoom on its premium iPhone 15 Pro launched earlier this month, to step back from the current leading position is a curious decision.
