We are two weeks out from Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion, and its 2.0 combat/systems update will be out before that, possibly as soon as late this week, early next.
CDPR has been showing off various changes coming in the patch, but far and away are the alterations to abilities, cyberware and a new Relic tree for even bigger bonuses. And what if I told you a 40 second trailer was going to be enough to make you believe that this is absolutely the time to return or give it a shot for the first time? Well, here you go:
The trailer shows off:
- The ability of Gorilla Arms to now launch enemies halfway to Los Angeles.
- Hopping around with Mantis Blade like some sort of velociraptor.
- New melee finishers including throat slitting, ritual katana beheading and Mantis Blade combo perforations.
- Leaping from a moving motorcycle to turn and shoot pursuing enemies in midair before blowing up their cars with a newly upgraded arm cannon.
Combat was never really the worst aspect of Cyberpunk 2077, but admittedly it did sometimes feel like you were just sort of in a normal FPS game set in the future with only a few changes. By really leaning into the most cyberpunk-y aspects of combat here, impossibly leaps, slo-mo and various arm-based weapons, it feels more distinctive than it did before.
I would expect to see a lot more videos like this when the 2.0 update drops. Remember, it is not attached to Phantom Liberty, so these new trees/weapons/cyberware abilities will all be available for the base game, and you can slaughter all the baddies (or now, the much-buffed police) using those new tricks.
I will have more to say on the 2.0 update uhhh tomorrow (shh), but I do think this short trailer alone is enough to sell a lot of people on the update, and in turn, perhaps Phantom Liberty itself. Though if Idris Elba isn’t enough to do that on his own, there may be no convincing you.
This will be the last major update for Cyberpunk 2077, and Phantom Liberty its only expansion, so they had to make it count. Will it live up to Blood and Wine before it? We will know in another week or two. Stay tuned for more info, I’d imagine, well before then, and more showcases like this one.
