It’s Tuesday and I figured we’d just go through ten historical events that took place throughout time on July 25th. Let’s dive right in:

  1. 306 AD: Constantine I was proclaimed Roman emperor by his troops in Eboracum (modern-day York, England). He would later become known as Constantine the Great.
  2. 1593: France’s King Henry IV converted from Protestantism to Catholicism in order to secure his position on the throne and end the Wars of Religion.
  3. 1759: British forces, led by General James Wolfe, began their assault on the French-held Quebec City during the Seven Years’ War (French and Indian War). The battle would result in a British victory, but both Wolfe and the French commander, General Montcalm, were killed.
  4. 1795: The French government approved the “Metric System” as the country’s standard system of weights and measures.
  5. 1861: The United States Congress passed the Crittenden-Johnson Resolution, stating that the Civil War was being fought to preserve the Union and not to end slavery.
  6. 1909: French aviator Louis Blériot made the first flight across the English Channel in a powered aircraft, flying from Calais, France, to Dover, England.
  7. 1943: Benito Mussolini, the former fascist dictator of Italy, was dismissed from power and arrested after the fall of his regime during World War II.
  8. 1952: Puerto Rico became a self-governing commonwealth associated with the United States after its constitution was approved by the U.S. Congress.
  9. 1978: Louise Brown, the world’s first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF), was born in Oldham, England.
  10. 2000: Air France Flight 4590, a Concorde supersonic aircraft, crashed shortly after takeoff from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, killing all 109 passengers and crew on board and four people on the ground.

Wordle Bot Analysis

Well I guess you can chock this one up to pure luck. I guessed while and it left me with just one—very obvious—choice. Wheel rolled plainly into view and I guessed it for the win! Huzzah!

Today’s Score

A rather smashing good day for your humble narrator. I get 2 points for guessing in two and 1 point for beating the Bot, who took four. That’s three points for me! Huzzah!!!

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “wheel” has an ancient etymology that can be traced back to Proto-Indo-European (PIE), the hypothesized common ancestor of many modern Indo-European languages. The PIE root for “wheel” is *kʷékʷlos, which meant “wheel” or “disk.”

From the PIE root, the word evolved into various forms across different Indo-European languages:

  1. Old English: “hweol” or “hweowol”
  2. Old Norse: “hvel”
  3. Old High German: “huol”
  4. Latin: “rota”
  5. Greek: “kuklos” (κύκλος)

These linguistic developments show how the concept of the wheel was present and essential in the early societies that spoke these languages. The word “wheel” has remained remarkably consistent throughout history and is still widely used in many languages today, reflecting the continued importance of this invention in human civilization.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

  • Here are the rules:1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating Erik
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to Erik

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.

I’d love it if you gave me a follow on Twitter or Facebook dearest Wordlers. Have a lovely day!

As always, I’d love it if you’d follow me here on this blog and subscribe to my YouTube channel and my Substack so you can stay up-to-date on all my TV, movie and video game reviews and coverage. Thanks!
