Today’s Wordle #772 Hints, Clues And Answer For Monday, July 31st

I’m pretty beat today, having spent the weekend in the arduous pursuit of fun: Playing Pathfinder and other tabletop roleplaying games with my brother and friends.

The struggle is real, folks. The struggle is real.

But I am beat and so I’m going to get straight to the point with this Wordle guide. Let’s get our guessing pants on and get to work!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Harry, but not the prince.

The Clue: This word ends with a vowel.

See yesterday’s Wordle #771 right here.

Wordle Bot Analysis

This went quite well. Whole got me two letters in green boxes right off the bat, though with 33 words remaining my chances of guessing the correct word in round 2 were slim to none. Instead, I tried to eliminate as many possible letters as I could with gains, and this paid dividends. Only one possible solution remained: style.

Today’s Score

I felt pretty good about getting this one in three—until I saw that Wordle Bot guessed in just two! In the end, it’s a wash: 1 point for guessing in three and -1 points for losing to the damn Bot. Lame!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “style” has an interesting etymology that traces back to Latin and Old French. Here’s a brief overview of its origins:

  1. Latin: The root of the word “style” comes from the Latin word “stilus,” which had multiple meanings, including a pointed instrument used for writing on wax tablets, a stylus used in sculpture, and a pen for writing. The stylus was an essential tool for writers and scribes in ancient times.
  2. Old French: The word “style” was borrowed from Latin into Old French as “estile” or “estil,” which retained the sense of a writing instrument or pen. Old French was spoken in various regions of what is now France and neighboring areas during the medieval period.
  3. Middle English: During the Middle Ages, the word “style” was borrowed from Old French into Middle English, and it still referred primarily to a writing instrument or pen. This usage can be found in early English texts.
  4. Extended Meanings: Over time, the term “style” began to take on extended meanings beyond its literal connection to writing instruments. It started being used to describe a particular manner or mode of expression, especially in writing or artistic representation. This broader sense emerged in English during the 14th and 15th centuries.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

From this historical development, the word “style” eventually came to encompass various connotations, including a distinctive manner of artistic expression, a particular fashion or way of dressing, and a manner of behavior or speaking that reflects individuality or uniqueness. Today, “style” is widely used in a range of contexts, from literature and art to fashion and design, and it continues to evolve with the changing times and cultural influences.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

  • Here are the rules:1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating Erik
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to Erik

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.

I’d love it if you gave me a follow on Twitter or Facebook dearest Wordlers. Have a lovely day!

As always, I’d love it if you’d follow me here on this blog and subscribe to my YouTube channel and my Substack so you can stay up-to-date on all my TV, movie and video game reviews and coverage. Thanks!
