Lazy Sunday time, folks! And as we do on some lazy Sundays, here are some interesting and crazy things that happened on this day in history:

  1. 1605: The Gunpowder Plot – Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives placed beneath the House of Lords in London. The plot was an attempt to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne of England.
  2. 1872: Women’s suffrage in the U.S. – Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for attempting to vote in the presidential election, defying laws that prohibited women from voting. Her action was an important moment in the fight for women’s suffrage.
  3. 1911: After declaring neutrality in the Italo-Turkish War, the Ottoman Empire lost the Tripolitania Vilayet (what is now Libya) to Italy.
  4. 1912: Woodrow Wilson was elected as the 28th President of the United States.
  5. 1913: Ludwig III became the last King of Bavaria after a declaration that deposed his cousin, King Otto.
  6. 1937: Adolf Hitler held a secret meeting in which he revealed his plans for acquiring “living space” for the German people at the expense of other nations.
  7. 1940: Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to an unprecedented third term as President of the United States.
  8. 1955: After the Montgomery Bus Boycott began, the Interstate Commerce Commission banned racial segregation on interstate trains and buses.
  9. 1994: George Foreman, at age 45, became boxing’s oldest heavyweight champion by defeating 26-year-old Michael Moorer.
  10. 2006: Saddam Hussein, former president of Iraq, was sentenced to death by hanging for the crime against humanity of murdering 148 Iraqi Shi’ites in 1982.
  11. 2013: India launched the Mars Orbiter Mission, its first interplanetary probe, which made it the fourth space agency to reach Mars.

Alrighty then, let’s do this Wordle!

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

Super lucky opening guess but not quite lucky enough to get it in two (let alone one). Flame is a word I use from time to time as a stand-in for slate which is Wordle Bot’s favorite word. Today, flame was better.

Alas, I guessed flake for my second guess, which turned out to be exactly the kind of guess you’d expect from that word. But I only had one option remaining after that: flare for the win!

Today’s Score

Actually quite a lovely day: 1 point for guessing in three and 1 for beating the Bot, who took four. 2 points baby! Huzzah!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “flare” has its roots in Middle English, coming from the verb “flaren” which means to spread out. It was borrowed from Middle Dutch “vleren,” a variant of “vleien,” which meant to spread, flow, or float. The notion of spreading outward is essential to the meaning of “flare,” which can refer to a sudden burst of flame or light, or the action of something spreading outward from a central point.

In its modern usage, “flare” can have several meanings, including:

  • A sudden burst of fire or light.
  • A device that produces a bright light for signaling, illumination, or identification.
  • The spreading out of a dress, pants, or other garment.
  • A sudden outbreak of violence or conflict.
  • An exacerbation of symptoms or a sudden outburst of emotion.

The word has evolved over time, but the core concept of spreading out or bursting outward remains central to its various applications.

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

Here are the rules:

  • 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating me
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
