On Forbes Newsroom, California Democratic Congressman Brad Sherman responded to the horrific attacks on Israel by Hamas from air, land and sea on October 7th — and Israel’s subsequent bombardment on Gaza ahead of an expected ground invasion.
Sherman shared his thoughts on the Biden Administration’s response to the escalating conflict. “I think we see how experienced President Biden is in foreign policy,” Sherman tells Forbes Newsroom.
“His support for Israel is expressed eloquently, and at the same time, he is reminding Israel to follow the rules of armed conflict, with a focus on trying to minimize the deaths of Palestinian civilians.”
Sherman responded to recent comments from Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), in which the Republican expressed unequivocal support for Israel, adding that the country could do whatever it must to defend itself, including leveling Gaza. Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) condemned the comments, arguing Graham’s comments were an attempt to “justify the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.”
Sherman took issue with both lawmakers’ comments, arguing that “Israel is doing what it can to protect the Palestinian people,” adding that historically, this is the only time “one of the warring sides” has given advance notice.
Sherman also discussed his recent condemnation of MSNBC’s coverage of the conflict, in which he warned the network to not “take statements by Gaza bureaus at face value.”
Speaking to Forbes, Sherman called out media for referring to Hamas as militants rather than terrorists, and said, “I know the press is anxious to get information about what’s happening in Gaza, but you can’t embrace Hamas sources of that information as if they are likely to be accurate.”
