How Startups Are Disrupting Traditional Healthcare

Entrepreneur & co-founder of Neuronic, Liam Pingree shares insights on health trends, high performance and business strategy.

The landscape of healthcare is undergoing a seismic shift, and at the epicenter of this transformation are innovative health and technology startups.

In 2023, I’m witnessing more companies that are not confined to the traditional molds of pharmaceutical giants or conventional medical practices. Instead, these companies are focusing on individualized health through new technologies, which I believe could reshape how we perceive and approach healthcare.

From my perspective, gone are the days when healthcare is one-size-fits-all. The rise of wearable devices, remote medical appointments and customized treatments (paywall) has ushered in an era of personalized medicine. The days of relying solely on general remedies are over and have been replaced by an era of proactive health management. For instance, devices like the Oura ring, which I currently use, meticulously track sleep patterns, and the Whoop fitness tracker, which I have yet to try, monitor a myriad of physiological metrics. Devices like these can help empower individuals to take charge of their own well-being.

Elevating Personalized Healthcare

Until recently, I believe the healthcare narrative was dominated by standardized treatments and solutions, irrespective of the unique complexities of individual bodies. However, health and tech startups bring a new perspective to the table. Many of these companies are focusing on the diversity in our biological makeup and providing tailored interventions.

A prime example of this paradigm shift can be seen in the story of Spotify CEO Daniel Ek’s involvement with Neko Health. Ek co-founded Neko Health to provide personalized care that is attuned to each person’s distinctive health profile by offering comprehensive health assessments. These clinics use advanced technologies to scan and detect potential issues in their early stages. This shifts the focus from treating diseases to preventing them.

Another example is Kernel’s work in brain scanning, which opens up new avenues for understanding and optimizing our brain health.

I’m also seeing the development of solutions that leverage light to benefit brain health. My own company, for example, provides a light therapy device. The Brain Photobiomodulation Clinic at Massachusetts General Hospital is another example; it provides “non-invasive treatment for patients with neuropsychiatric conditions who are unable to find relief through antidepressant medications or psychotherapy,” the clinic’s website said. It’s worth noting that “photobiomodulation” is the common word in research and in clinics for light therapy.

Furthermore, I believe entrepreneurship, health and innovation intersect. I’m observing more business leaders not only focusing on their ventures but also taking charge of their personal well-being in unique ways. Navigating the path of building a business while prioritizing personal well-being is undeniably daunting, particularly for high-stress business leaders. The allure of achievement can sometimes cast a shadow on efforts to maintain their health.

Currently, disrupting traditional healthcare goes beyond technological advancements and personalized treatments. It encompasses a profound mission that fuels transformative change at its very core. I consider an example of this ethos to be embodied by a London-based startup called UNTIL, which emphasizes a larger mission of empowering healthcare and wellness professionals through certain health treatments and business support services.

What This Means For Entrepreneurs

The convergence of health and technology is reshaping the way people view and engage with traditional healthcare. Startups are pioneering a paradigm shift toward personalized health management, acknowledging the unique complexities of each individual.

If you are a healthcare, wellness or medical entrepreneur, I suggest thinking about how you approach health. Is it as an interlinked system or a diagnostic-driven approach? Moving forward, it’s crucial to recognize that the health revolution is about fostering a holistic approach to well-being that enables people to thrive personally and professionally, fueled by missions that resonate deeply with your core values.
