Team Vitality has won the Rocket League World Championship at the RLCS finals in Düsseldorf, Germany. They took down Team BDS in the grand final 4-0 to become world champions for the second time.
The final was a match between two French organisations with predominantly French players, making the biggest match of the Rocket League season effectively a local derby. Things kicked off in front of a raucous crowd in the arena, with hundreds of fans for both teams cheering on their heroes.
Game one of the grand final was a one-sided affair, with Vitality taking a convincing 3-0 win and never giving BDS a chance to get into the game. Game two started out much the same, with Vitality taking another early lead and heaping the pressure onto BDS. BDS did manage to stabilize things as game two went on, but they never put the ball in the goal, giving Vitality a 1-0 win and a 2-0 overall advantage.
Then, out of nowhere, two seconds into game three BDS got their first goal of the final. From the start, BDS scored one of the simplest goals of the entire tournament to bring them back into contention. However, their hope was wiped out less than a minute later as Vitality answered back with an incredible team goal to even it up and then took the lead shortly after. The momentum swung again as BDS evened it up to 3-3 and went into overtime, but Vitality once again showed just how good they are, scoring next to take the game three win and set up match point.
Some technical difficulties somewhat killed the momentum that the final had at this point, but soon enough game four was underway with BDS needing a miracle to become champions.
It took just 12 seconds for Vitality to take the lead in what would end up being the final game of the tournament. The game ended 2-0 in Vitality’s favor and they really showed why they deserve to be world champions. They looked unstoppable, and are undoubtedly the best Rocket League team in the world right now.
Team Vitality made it to the final in impressive fashion. In the group stage, they took down Moist Esports and Spacestation Gaming with ease, taking 4-0 and 4-1 wins respectively. This qualified them for the playoff stage, and after their impressive run, they were considered a favorite to win the whole thing. In the quarter-final, they took down Team Falcons 4-2 and then came up against another local French rival org Karmine Corp in the semi-final. Again Vitality took a 4-2 win in a match that saw one of the most hyped crowds ever, to set up their place in the final.
On the other side of the bracket, Team BDS also looked incredibly strong. They too went 2-0 in the group stage, taking down Falcons 4-2 and Karmine Corp 4-1, before meeting G2 Esports in the quarter-final. They took down G2 4-1 and then looked absolutely dominant in the semi-final against Team Liquid where they won 4-0.
The win not only gives Vitality the title of Rocket League world champion but also the first-place prize of $600,000. Runners-up BDS takes home $400,000 while the two teams who round out the top four, Karmine Corp and Team Liquid get $200,000 each.
