‘Resident Evil 4’, ‘Signalis’ Take Top Honors

Resident Evil 4 Remake has picked up the first of what could be many awards during one of the most competitive years for triple-As, winning every single one of its five categories–and the top prize–at the Horror Game Awards 2023 last night (September 7).

The Horror Game Awards, organized by publisher Feardemic Games and hosted in Kraków, Poland, celebrated the biggest players in the horror genre of the previous 12 months across 13 distinct categories. Each winner, chosen by the gaming community through online voting, walked away with a Golden Bat trophy.

Signalis was the only other multi-award-winner of the night, scooping two Golden Bats for Best Narrative and Best Indie Horror Game. Dead Space Remake, Scorn, Silent Hill 2, and The Outlast Trials also celebrated success on the night, while writer Mikael Hedberg (Alone in the Dark, Amnesia: Rebirth, SOMA) was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

There were some notable games that walked away with nothing. The exceptionally received Immortality missed out entirely, despite four nominations. The Callisto Protocol remained as divisive as ever, going home without a gong.

It was also disappointing to see the excellent Dredge lose out on a prize, despite four nominations; similarly, the excellent Saturnalia–one of last year’s best indie games–was beaten by Scorn for Best Art Direction. Sure, Scorn’s visceral body horror is hard to forget, but Saturnalia created something entirely new, hauntingly beautiful, and oppressively claustrophobic. Really, there really isn’t anything like it.
