Tranya is one of those audio brands you’ve probably never heard of. Don’t let that put you off because the company makes some competent products worth considering and could save you money compared to some of the more recognizable deluxe brands.
The new Tranya Nova is a pair of stem-style true wireless earbuds designed to compete with Apple’s AirPods and other similar styles. These true wireless earbuds feel well made and are housed in a shiny black charging case that looks as if it could pick up scratches quite easily.
Built around the Qualcomm QCC3072 chipset powered by Bluetooth 5.3, these earbuds are as technologically up-to-date as any others on the market. The Tranya Nova earbuds have the power of Qualcomm with its aptX Adaptative audio codec, and they also use large 12mm dynamic drivers that can deliver a heft bass.
As you would expect with a pair of true wireless earbuds at this price point, the Tranya Nova also include the latest hybrid Active Noise Cancelation technology, which can cut unwanted sound by up to 43dB. The ANC technology used in wireless earbuds has come a long way recently, although it’s still not quite as effective as the large over-the-ear wireless headphones.
While hybrid ANC can reduce unwanted sounds, it’s also important to physically keep as much sound from reaching the listener’s ears. That makes a lot of difference. To tackle this, Tranya ships the Nova earbuds with a selection of silicone ear tips in various sizes to suit most ear canals. You must choose the correct ear tip size to get the best acoustic seal to keep out more outside noise and ensure the bass is amplified.
Regarding battery life, a single charge of the Tranya Nova can provide up to 36 hours of playback time. The earbuds can play for up to nine hours on a single charge before they need to be put back in their charging case for a top-up. There are three extra full charges in the case. A 10-minute burst charge of the earbuds will deliver up to 2 hours of playtime, which is ideal if you forget to charge your earbuds and want to go out for a quick run.
Each earbud includes touch controls for pausing the music and cycling through the ANC modes. I like that you can customize the controls using the Tranya smartphone app, although the controls are a bit sensitive and can be triggered simply by adjusting the earbuds. The app also includes a graphic equalizer, making it easy to sculpt the sound to suit the wearer’s needs.
Many people use earbuds to make phone calls or participate in Zoom or Teams meetings. The Tranya Nova earbuds have six separate microphones – three per earbud – for picking up the user’s voice and the ANC system. Tranya has also added Qualcomm’s cVc 8.0 ENC technology, which reduces background noise by detecting unwanted sounds and eliminating them while boosting the human voice. It works and Qualcomm is leading the game in this technology.
The Tranya Nova earbuds also support Bluetooth multipoint connectivity, which enables two devices to link to the earbuds simultaneously. This feature is handy if you have a work and a personal phone. You can listen to music on one device and then seamlessly pick up a call on the other device without breaking a sweat.
For gamers and movie watchers, Tranya has introduced a low-latency mode, meaning the delay between what’s happening on screen and the soundtrack is shaved to an imperceptible 40ms, meaning movies and game sound effects always stay in sync.
Finally, for those who enjoy life outdoors or who may cycle or walk to work, the Tranya Nova earbuds are certified to IPX5 for water resistance. IPX5 doesn’t mean the Nova are entirely waterproof, but they can withstand rain and sweat without harming the earbuds; don’t take them swimming.
Verdict: The sound quality of the Tranya Nova earbuds is good, with a wide range of musical genres. These earphones won’t give Apple any sleepless nights, but they are good all-round performers for the money. I particularly like the wind-reduction mode, which does an excellent job of cutting the effect of wind when you’re out in a gale or maybe cycling while listening to music. The fit of the earbuds is good, although not best in class, but it shouldn’t be a problem unless you wear them for extended periods of more than a couple of hours. The ANC works well, and wireless charging is welcome at this price. If you want a budget pair of true wireless ANC earbuds, then the Tranya Nova tick most boxes and offer good performance for the money.
Pricing & Availability: The Tranya Nova true wireless ANC earbuds are available now and cost $79.99.
