Today’s Wordle #836 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, October 3rd

October is here and autumn is in full force. Quite suddenly, it seems, the days have gotten far chillier. The leaves are already changing. And after some rain and wind this past weekend, I can see snow up on the mountains:

It’s actually quite lovely. I’m still fighting off this cold but I managed to get out for a lovely spot of lunch, a coffee, a visit to a boutique plant shop and then a hike with my three dogs in the forest. That’s a lot more moving around than I’ve done in the past few days, laid up with my fever and congestion.

In any case, it’s almost the time of year when a fire in the hearth and a cozy book and some hot tea all combine into something quite magical. Almost but not quite. In any case, let’s do this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Word

The Hint: Although. A space of time.

The Clue: This word ends with a vowel.

Wordle Bot Analysis

After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.

I feel pretty good about today’s Wordle, despite it taking four guesses, because I managed to guess it without a single yellow box! There’s nothing special about that. I don’t get extra points or anything. It’s just kind of neat when every letter you guess ends up in the right spot from the get-go.

Shore landed me two green boxes and, I discovered later, just 12 words remained to choose from. I wish I’d picked all new letters for my second guess. I might have narrowed it down and gotten it in three. Instead, I guessed chime which really wasn’t bad, but still left me with four options and just three correct letters. I went with my gut and guessed whine because, let’s face it, in life there sure is an awful lot of whining, especially when you write mild critiques of Star Wars shows and have to face the wrath of its most toxic fandom for days afterward.

Can you solve today’s phrase?

This, alas, left me with two words to choose from. Wordle Bot pointed out that thine would have been a better guess and I’d have only had one—white would be straight out—but I guessed while and got it nonetheless. Huzzah!

Today’s Score

A total wash today. 0 points for guessing in four and 0 points for tying with the Wordle Bot. It’s a fair cop!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “while” has an interesting etymology. It comes from the Old English word “hwil,” which was used to refer to a period of time or a while. In Old English, “hwil” could also mean “a space of time” or “a season.” Over time, the spelling and pronunciation evolved, and “hwil” eventually became “while” in Middle English.

The word “while” has been used in English for many centuries to indicate a period of time or duration, and it is still commonly used in that sense today. Additionally, “while” can also be used as a conjunction to introduce a contrast or a condition, as in “while I like chocolate, my sister prefers vanilla.” In this context, it implies a sense of “although” or “whilst.”

Play Competitive Wordle Against Me!

I’ve been playing a cutthroat game of PvP Wordle against my nemesis Wordle But. Now you should play against me! I can be your nemesis! (And your helpful Wordle guide, of course). You can also play against the Bot if you have a New York Times subscription.

Here are the rules:

  • 1 point for getting the Wordle in 3 guesses.
  • 2 points for getting it in 2 guesses.
  • 3 points for getting it in 1 guess.
  • 1 point for beating me
  • 0 points for getting it in 4 guesses.
  • -1 point for getting it in 5 guesses.
  • -2 points for getting it in 6 guesses.
  • -3 points for losing.
  • -1 point for losing to me

You can either keep a running tally of your score if that’s your jam or just play day-to-day if you prefer.
